Memorial Day Weekend in Kansas City

Hi everyone! It’s Michael Gortenburg here.

Memorial Day Weekend is one of my favorite times to be in Kansas City. It’s the unofficial start of summer, and the city comes alive with events that honor our heroes, bring the community together, and offer plenty of fun for all ages. Whether you’re looking to reflect, celebrate, or just enjoy some quality time outdoors, here are my top picks for making the most of Memorial Day Weekend in KC:

Celebration at the Station
This signature Kansas City event is back and better than ever in 2025! Held outside Union Station, the evening features a free concert from the Kansas City Symphony, followed by a spectacular fireworks display. It’s truly a bucket-list event for local families. Arrive early with lawn chairs or picnic blankets and enjoy pre-show activities, food vendors, and a festive atmosphere.

National WWI Museum and Memorial
The National WWI Museum hosts a powerful Memorial Day event on the lawn overlooking the city each year. Expect a flyover, patriotic music, speeches from veterans and community leaders, and a wreath-laying ceremony that’s both somber and inspiring. This event is free and open to the public, and it’s one of the most moving ways to begin the holiday weekend. Bring a blanket and arrive early for good seating.

Dinosaurs Around the World at the Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium
For families looking for fun, the Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium is hosting the “Dinosaurs Around the World: The Great Outdoors” exhibit throughout the weekend. It’s a great way to combine education and entertainment for the kids.

Painted Garden at Powell Gardens
Experience the beauty of spring at Powell Gardens with their “Painted Garden” event. It’s a perfect spot for a leisurely stroll among vibrant floral displays.

Oceans of Fun Season Opening
Kick off the summer with a splash! Oceans of Fun, the largest outdoor water park in the Midwest, opens its season on May 24. It’s a fantastic way to cool down and have some fun in the sun.

Kansas City truly shines during Memorial Day Weekend, offering a mix of solemn remembrance and joyful celebration. Whether you’re attending a ceremony, enjoying live music, or exploring local attractions, there’s something for everyone to appreciate and enjoy.
