Festive Holiday Light Displays to See in KC This Winter

Michael Gortenburg Holiday Lights Kansas City Blog

Hi everyone, it’s Michael Gortenburg here.

One of the things I enjoy most about winter in Kansas City is how the whole city seems to glow this time of year. As soon as the temperatures drop, KC transforms into a festive mix of twinkling lights, holiday colors, and local traditions that make the season feel warm and welcoming. If you’re looking to get into the holiday spirit, here are some of the light displays I always look forward to each winter.

Plaza Lights

The Plaza Lights are one of KC’s most iconic holiday traditions. The entire area comes alive with colorful bulbs outlining the classic architecture, creating a bright and cheerful atmosphere. Whether you’re walking with family, grabbing dinner, or simply enjoying the view, the Plaza is always a great place to experience the magic of the season.

Winter Magic Drive-Through

For a relaxed, cozy way to take in holiday lights, Winter Magic is a fun option. You can stay warm in your car while driving through tunnels of lights, animated displays, and festive scenes. It’s a simple, enjoyable way to spend an evening, especially if you’re taking kids or looking for something low-stress after a long day.

Powell Gardens Festival of Lights

Powell Gardens offers a peaceful and scenic holiday experience. Their light displays stretch across the gardens, turning the pathways into glowing trails. It’s a perfect outing if you want something calm, beautiful, and a little different from the usual holiday bustle. A stroll here feels like stepping into a winter postcard.

Neighborhood Holiday Displays

Some of the best lights in Kansas City come from neighborhoods that go all out each year. Areas known for their creative displays are great for a casual drive or walk, and there’s something special about seeing entire streets come together to celebrate the season. It’s a great way to enjoy the local community while taking in the festive atmosphere.

Final Thoughts

Holiday light displays are one of my favorite parts of winter in KC. They bring people together, brighten the darker evenings, and remind us of the simple joys that make this season so meaningful. Whether you’re exploring with family, spending time with friends, or enjoying a quiet solo night out, Kansas City has plenty of places to feel the holiday spirit.

Looking forward to seeing the city shine again this year.

Exploring Kansas City by Bus

Side view of unrecognizable young African American man in casual clothes and backpack using smartphone while standing on city street and waiting for bus

Hey everyone, Michael Gortenburg here!

One of the best ways to really see a city is through its public transit, and Kansas City has a bus system that makes exploring both convenient and affordable. Whether you’re commuting to work, heading out for a night downtown, or just discovering new neighborhoods, riding the bus gives you a front-row seat to everything KC has to offer.

Why Take the Bus in KC

Kansas City’s bus system covers a wide network, making it easy to move between districts without worrying about parking. Riding the bus is not only cost-effective but also a more sustainable way to get around the city. You’ll also find that it gives you a new perspective on familiar streets and neighborhoods when you see them from the bus window.

Key Routes to Know

Some of the most popular routes take you right through the heart of Kansas City. The Main MAX line is one of the most used, running from the River Market through Downtown, Crown Center, and the Plaza. Along this ride, you can hop off for shopping, restaurants, or a quick stop at cultural attractions like Union Station. Other routes connect neighborhoods like Westport, Midtown, and Brookside, giving you a chance to explore the city’s diverse character.

What to Expect on the Ride

KC buses are modern and accessible, with features like bike racks and free Wi-Fi on many routes. The ride itself is usually smooth and relaxed, making it easy to catch up on emails, read a book, or just enjoy the scenery. For those visiting, it’s also a great way to meet locals and get recommendations on places to go next.

Tips for Bus Travel in KC

Make sure to check the RideKC app or website for real-time updates on schedules and routes. Having exact fare or a bus pass ready makes boarding quicker, and planning your trip ahead of time ensures you’ll get where you want to go without unnecessary stress.

Discovering the City One Stop at a Time

Taking the bus is more than just getting from point A to point B. It’s an opportunity to slow down and notice parts of Kansas City you might otherwise miss. From the bustling energy of Downtown to the historic charm of the Plaza, each ride connects you to a new part of the city.

Exploring KC by bus is an easy and enjoyable way to get to know the city better. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, I encourage you to give it a try and see where the route takes you.

Memorial Day Weekend in Kansas City

michael gortenburg memorial day weekend

Hi everyone! It’s Michael Gortenburg here.

Memorial Day Weekend is one of my favorite times to be in Kansas City. It’s the unofficial start of summer, and the city comes alive with events that honor our heroes, bring the community together, and offer plenty of fun for all ages. Whether you’re looking to reflect, celebrate, or just enjoy some quality time outdoors, here are my top picks for making the most of Memorial Day Weekend in KC:

Celebration at the Station
This signature Kansas City event is back and better than ever in 2025! Held outside Union Station, the evening features a free concert from the Kansas City Symphony, followed by a spectacular fireworks display. It’s truly a bucket-list event for local families. Arrive early with lawn chairs or picnic blankets and enjoy pre-show activities, food vendors, and a festive atmosphere.

National WWI Museum and Memorial
The National WWI Museum hosts a powerful Memorial Day event on the lawn overlooking the city each year. Expect a flyover, patriotic music, speeches from veterans and community leaders, and a wreath-laying ceremony that’s both somber and inspiring. This event is free and open to the public, and it’s one of the most moving ways to begin the holiday weekend. Bring a blanket and arrive early for good seating.

Dinosaurs Around the World at the Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium
For families looking for fun, the Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium is hosting the “Dinosaurs Around the World: The Great Outdoors” exhibit throughout the weekend. It’s a great way to combine education and entertainment for the kids.

Painted Garden at Powell Gardens
Experience the beauty of spring at Powell Gardens with their “Painted Garden” event. It’s a perfect spot for a leisurely stroll among vibrant floral displays.

Oceans of Fun Season Opening
Kick off the summer with a splash! Oceans of Fun, the largest outdoor water park in the Midwest, opens its season on May 24. It’s a fantastic way to cool down and have some fun in the sun.

Kansas City truly shines during Memorial Day Weekend, offering a mix of solemn remembrance and joyful celebration. Whether you’re attending a ceremony, enjoying live music, or exploring local attractions, there’s something for everyone to appreciate and enjoy.

The Best Bags for Traveling

Hi everyone! It’s Michael Gortenburg here.

Knowing which bag to use when traveling is essential. No one wants to be stuck carrying their items around all day, but you also don’t want to overcompensate with something bulky that could get in your way. So here are my recommendations for bags to fit each possible travel situation:

For Day Travel: Fanny Pack

It’s a staple for a reason. It’s compact and convenient, having enough space for a phone, cash, wallet, and other necessities. These bags are handy when walking around a city for the day or visiting different tourist attractions. It keeps all your essentials in close reach and will take the weight off your shoulders.

For Hiking: Sports Backpack

If you’re planning a hiking trip, a good outdoor pack is essential to your preparation. Depending on the length of your hike, you’ll want a bag with enough room to support essentials like water and food. However, it’s also important to keep weight in mind. You don’t want a bag weighing on your back while hiking.

For Cross Country Road Trips: Duffel Bag

Packing for a cross-country road trip can be tricky. Depending on how many people will be in the car with you, you don’t want to pack too much and be squished together for hours. But you also don’t want to lack any other essentials you’ll need during your trek. I’ve found that a decently sized duffel bag provides enough room to pack what you need and get to it with ease in a cramped car.

For International Exploring: Large Suitcase

International travel brings about a whole different set of items necessary for you to bring. I highly recommend investing in a suitcase large enough to cover your time abroad. Some carry-on bags provide a lot of room for you to pack heavy, but if you’re willing to check a bag, you may as well go all the way. Pack smart, but ensure you’ve covered all the bases for more extended trips abroad that contain everything you’ll need. If you want to know more about how to prepare for a long-haul flight, check out my blog here.

Knowing which bag will be the most helpful on your trips is essential whether you’re packing heavy or light. Think about what to prioritize and pack accordingly!

Best Items for the Summer

Hi everyone! It’s Michael Gortenburg here.

It’s finally summer, and if it’s anything like the past few weeks, the heat will continue to be scorching. The high temperatures can stop you from enjoying the outdoors, but there are plenty of ways to beat the heat and make the most of your summer. I want to share some of the best items for summer that will keep you cool while you soak in the sunshine.

Portable Fan

Unless you’re planted on a beach, you may lack a breeze to help break the heat. A small, portable fan can bring the breeze to you and keep you cool wherever you are. I like to have it on hand when I know I’ll be sitting in the same spot outside for a long time. An outdoor concert or show becomes all the more tolerable in the heat when you’ve got this in your back pocket.

Compact Speaker

Whether you’re spending time soaking up the sun in the yard or hosting a barbecue for the neighborhood, a speaker is sure to liven things up. I recommend a more compact model so you can bring it with you on any trips to the park or beach.

Reusable Water Bottle

Dehydration is no joke, and if you plan to spend any time in the sun, you should plan to stay hydrated. A reusable water bottle you can bring on the go will make it easy to drink and refill on your journey.

A Sun Hat

The best way to protect yourself from the sun is coverage. Any kind of hat, whether it’s a baseball cap to support your favorite team or a wide-brimmed hat, will protect your scalp and face from burning and help keep you cool while you’re outside. These seasonal hats come with all sorts of brim sizes, so you can pick how much coverage you want.

Picnic Blanket

If you’re anything like me, you love spending time outdoors during summertime. But sometimes places to sit, especially parks on a busy day, can be hard to come by. I suggest keeping a picnic blanket on hand for any park, beach, or concert outings. I prefer ones with an easy-to-clean, waterproof underside, so I don’t have to worry about any mess.

Summer is a beautiful season with plenty of great outdoor activities to explore, but higher temperatures can sometimes interrupt plans. I hope some of these items will help you beat the heat and enjoy your summer!

My Favorite National Parks

Hi everyone! It’s Michael Gortenburg here.

As an avid traveler, I always appreciate a great view. There are so many natural wonders across the globe for us to visit, and I’m lucky to have witnessed some beautiful ones. Here are some of my favorite national parks that I’ve seen in the U.S.:

Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone was the United States’ first national park, and 150 years later, it continues to bring in tourists for its geothermal features and wildlife. Just make sure you keep to the designated trails! The wildlife here is beautiful to view from afar but dangerous up close.

Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon is famous for a reason. The grand scope of the features is almost overwhelming, with years of running water forming stunning rock faces. If there’s any national park in the U.S. on this list you should visit at least once, it’s this one.

Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail

This historic commemoration of the Lewis and Clark Expedition spans 4,900 miles of the United States. My home state of Missouri is one of the 16 states it crosses through. On the trail, visitors get to follow the trail’s legendary history.

Glacier Bay National Park

The state of Alaska has many natural wonders to observe. At Glacier Bay National Park, visitors get an upfront look at stunning glaciers that make them forget they’re in the coldest state in the U.S. This park contains 3.3 million acres of mountain, beautiful glaciers, deep fjords, and a temperate rainforest, so you’ll be sure to find something that captures your attention.

Mammoth Cave National Park

Mammoth Cave is the world’s longest-known cave system and home to a diverse group of plant and animal life. I highly recommend booking a guided cave tour when visiting. The park also has different tours to fit different fitness levels and accessibility so anyone can join in.

Everglades National Park

Florida’s beaches often hog most tourists’ attention, but there’s another natural wonder for outdoor lovers to enjoy. The Everglades National Park provides an up-close look at the Everglades’ unique flora and fauna through winding trails and guided tours.

Americans have many natural wonders just a car ride away, with different climates and wildlife to suit your travel preferences. I highly encourage taking the time to plan out a trip to witness one of these for yourself.

How to Save Money When Traveling

Hi everyone! It’s Michael Gortenburg here.

As an avid traveler myself, I know that traveling is one of the most gratifying experiences one can have. You get to see new places, meet new people and learn new things. However, I’m also aware it can be a pretty expensive undertaking. Here are some ways you can save money on your next trip.

Plan Early

Hotel and airline prices are cheaper the further out you go from your travel date, so make sure to book them as soon as you know when you’ll be traveling. This will especially come in handy if you’re planning on traveling close to the holidays, as you’ll be able to beat the inevitable rush of people scrambling for last-minute tickets.

Never Forget Your Points and Miles

You might have plenty of points saved up to cover your airfare completely. Before you empty your wallet on hotel or airline tickets, check to see what points you might have waiting in your back pocket.

Check Discount Travel Sites

When booking experiences or reservations for the location you’re traveling to, do a quick search on Groupon to see if there’s a discount you could utilize. Tours may have group discounts available or some restaurants in the area may even be running a deal while you’re visiting. These websites will be helpful to find all sorts of savings.

Set a Budget

Setting a strict budget for traveling is a great way to hold yourself accountable. I know the urge to buy souvenirs while you’re out traveling is a strong one, but having a budget to curb it can be very helpful. It’ll also help you cut out anything extra you might not actually want.

Car Rentals

Renting a car when you’re traveling can be an expensive undertaking, but relying on Ubers or public transportation might not be the best option either. Payment for Ubers can stack up and depending on where you’re visiting, public transit might not be reliable. I recommend checking out cheaper options for car rentals like Costco, Autoslash, or Turo to find a better deal.

Traveling always takes a decent amount of planning, but especially so when you’re trying to save money. There’s plenty of options for people trying to save money on trips. Just make sure you give yourself enough time to plan and you’ll have a perfect (and budget-friendly) travel plan ready in no time.

Travel Notes: Canada

Hi everyone! It’s Michael Gortenburg here.

I’ve been fortunate to travel well outside the bounds of Kansas City. Traveling is an incredible opportunity to broaden your experiences and gain a greater perspective of the world. I always enjoy soaking up the culture and noteworthy attractions wherever I end up. One of my favorite trips has been to Canada. With stunning views and a welcoming atmosphere, it’s easy to suggest it as your next travel destination. If you’re looking to travel there soon, here’s my take on the people, food, and my favorite sights the country has to offer!

The People

The infamous stereotype about Canadians’ kindness rang true during my journey. Locals were eager to show me and other tourists the best places to go for food and other. Everywhere I visited felt welcoming and inviting for those visiting for the first time. Don’t be afraid to reach out! Some of the best moments I’ve had when traveling were getting to connect with people from all over the globe.

The Food

During my trip, I sampled some of Canada’s famous poutine and was very impressed. The fries are salty and savory like most cheese fries here in the States, but the gravy really does provide a unique spin on it!

If you’ve never tried real maple syrup, make it a priority the next time you’re in Canada. Once you’ve tried it, you’ll never go back to store-bought. You can even drizzle a little on a slice of pizza, just like the locals.

The Sights

Canada has some remarkable nature for those of all ages to admire. Algonquin National Park for starters is a provincial park established in 1893, making it the oldest in all of Canada. Visit the various lakes to observe the wildlife or get a better view of sights like the Oxtongue River by hiking one of the park’s many trails.

The Toronto Zoo is the largest zoo in Canada, housing over 5,000 animals from over 500 species. This is a great spot for any nature lovers looking to get up close to animals or families looking for a good place to take the kids. Though nothing can beat the Kansas City Zoo, Toronto provides visitors the opportunity to observe the most taxonomically diverse group of animals in the world.

My personal favorite sight was by and far Niagara Falls. Getting to witness the powerful rush of the water is an exhilarating experience, just make sure to steer clear of the edge of the river. You and your family can catch a cruise to the base of the falls or get a view from above atop the Skylon Tower

If it is your first time traveling outside the country, consider visiting our neighbors to the north. There are enough similarities to the U.S. to ease you into international traveling with enough new tastes and sights to give you a great experience.

Things I Never Travel Without

Hi everyone! It’s Michael Gortenburg here.

No one wants to forget something important when they travel. Forgetting a small item can cause a slight annoyance or cause big problems. Either way, you want to fully enjoy your hard-earned trip without worrying about something small. Here are some of the things I make sure never to travel without.

Cash

I know many of us have come to rely on using our credit cards, but it’s good to always have cash on hand when traveling. Bring an amount you’re comfortable having handy for any impromptu purchases that need it. You don’t want to miss out on fun opportunities while traveling because the vendor only took bills. Not to mention, if you’re traveling abroad, cash is useful for currency exchanges when you need it most.

Comfortable Shoes

I understand the urge to look stylish while traveling, but making room in your luggage for more than just dress shoes is essential. If you’re like me, you’ll be doing a lot of exploring during you travels. Your feet will thank you when they’re not covered in blisters after the first day.

Phone Charger

In a world where nearly everyone’s got similar phone models, it’s usually easy to find someone nearby with a charger you can borrow. However, your own phone charger is just as important. When you’re traveling, make sure you bring your charger with you. You’ll need your phone for reservations and directions. You don’t want to get lost in a new place with no way to contact the people you’re with, so make sure your charger is ready to go. I always try to bring a portable charger with me so I can power up without an outlet!

Hand Sanitizer

Travel is exciting, but it’s also quite dirty. It’s a small thing you might not think about when packing for your travels, but I’ve found this tiny bottle to be one of my most frequently used items. People I travel with are always eager to borrow some. I recommend keeping a travel-size bottle on hand for any instance where clean hands are a must.

A Copy of Important Items

While I always make sure to have my driver’s license, or passport when necessary, on hand when I’m traveling, it’s important to consider what you’ll do if you misplace it. I recommend a paper copy of whatever could keep you from getting to the destination and back home safely and easily in your bag. There’s a lot of value in having all your important documents on your phone, but if that gets misplaced, you’ll want a backup plan.

These are just a few items you won’t know you need until you do. When packing for trips, it’s always better to be safe than sorry!
